Description: The ICA catchment boundaries were derived from the NSW River Basins spatial layer stored within the Corporate Enterprise Database (EDBP) layer, ADMIN.NSWCatchments\NSWRiverBasins. This dataset was adapted from the Australian River Basins 1997 spatial layer published by Geoscience Australia. (Australian River Basins 1997 was the result of a joint State and Commonwealth project to create a national spatial database of major hydrologic basins used in the assessment of water resources. The data was derived from topographic maps at scales ranging from 1:10 000 to 1:250 000.)Please note that some Irrigated Crop Areas assigned to a catchment may fall outside its mapped boundary. This can occur where properties located near catchment boundaries extract water from rivers within the catchment (e.g. along the Barwon–Darling River), resulting in irrigated areas being associated with the hydrologic catchment despite lying outside its spatial extent.

Description: This dataset contains a satellite observed timeseries of the extent of winter irrigated crop areas in NSW from present day, back to 1987. Observations have been derived from medium-resolution multi-spectral satellite imagery (30m/pixel Landsat with a 16 day return interval and 10 m/pixel Sentinel-2 with a 5 day return interval). The presence of irrigated crops is identified using established vegetation‑condition indicators commonly referenced in remote‑sensing literature to assess crop vigour and water‑stress patterns. Additionally, Earth observation–derived evapotranspiration datasets are incorporated to support the estimation of irrigated crop areas, improving the distinction between irrigated and non‑irrigated agricultural land. Expert opinion is then applied to qualify whether a field was irrigated, based on its greenness relative to the surrounding landscape throughout the winter season (May to October). The polygons are delineated in a semi-supervised manner and are accurate to the closest hectare.A metadata and data quality statement is available in the Documents section of the dataset homepage on the NSW SEED portal.
