Description: The NSW Murray Valley Floodplain boundary delineates the area to which the Floodplain Management Plan for the NSW Murray Valley Floodplain 2026 applies. The area within the boundary is declared to be a floodplain under the Water Management (General) Regulation 2025.The floodplain is 8,061 km2 in area and extends downstream from the repealed localised Tuppal-Bullatale FMP area in the east to the junction of the Murray and Murrumbidgee rivers in the west and includes areas currently within repealed localised FMPs and floodplains. To the south the floodplain boundary aligns with the Murray River, and to the north is generally bound by public roads. The floodplain connects with the floodplain boundaries for the Murrumbidgee Valley and Billabong Creek floodplains improving the assessment of cumulative impacts from individual flood works across the Murray–Darling Basin.A combination of hydraulic and administrative factors, where appropriate, have been used to develop the floodplain boundary including: • inundation data within the Murray catchment • hydraulic model development • the previous FMPs• water source boundaries, as established in water sharing plans • local government areas • major roads and railways which act as barriers to large scale flood movement.
